What drew you into a career in wealth management, and how has your journey shaped your approach?
After almost 25 years with General Motors in a corporate environment, I found myself at a stage in my life wondering how I could use all of the knowledge and skills I had acquired and honed in my career, but apply them in a setting outside of an aggravating corporate bureaucracy. Griffin and I worked together at General Motors, so he shared in part of the experience that I was trying to avoid. When he explained the core attributes it takes to be an effective wealth manager, it was clear that much of my experience was perfectly suited to the job. And, perhaps more importantly, a small wealth management firm like Masterpiece has virtually none of the frustrating traits of being in corporate environment.
What do you believe is the most important factor in building long-term relationships with clients?
I think trust and credibility go a long way towards building long-term relationships with clients. When you genuinely care about what is going on in a client's life and what their goals and objectives are for themselves and their families, you become not only trustworthy and credible, but an integral part of that client's future.
How do you define success when working with a client?
To me, success is helping to meet a client's goal and objectives in all stages of life.
Outside of work, what's a hobby or interest that helps you stay balanced or inspired?
Volleyball has provided a great way to stay active and competitive in addition to providing a social outlet. Pickleball and racquetball are similar for me, but volleyball is my primary athletic outlet. I also love music. I love going to concerts and listening to music. I'm still inspired to find great new music in addition to loving great music of the past. I am fortunate to have two children who are both talented musicians and with whom I get to play music as a family band on regular occasions. Lastly, my kids and I love to travel the world. I think it is important to make sure we continue to understand that there is a big world out there to discover.
